Background of the study
Ethnic associations have long been pivotal in nurturing inter-ethnic harmony and cultural exchange in diverse societies. In Ijebu North-East Local Government Area, Ogun State, these associations provide platforms for promoting dialogue, mutual respect, and cultural integration among various ethnic groups (Olatunji, 2023). Historically, ethnic associations have served not only as custodians of heritage but also as mediators in conflict resolution and community development. In recent years, as globalization and urbanization increase ethnic interactions, the role of these associations has become even more critical in mitigating ethnic tensions and fostering unity (Ajayi, 2024). Their activities range from cultural festivals and educational programs to advocacy for minority rights, thereby reinforcing social cohesion. However, challenges such as resource limitations, political manipulation, and shifting cultural identities have emerged, affecting their ability to achieve their intended goals (Ogunleye, 2025). This study evaluates the effectiveness of ethnic associations in building inter-ethnic harmony and examines how their initiatives contribute to sustainable peace and community integration in Ijebu North-East.
Statement of the problem
Despite the positive role played by ethnic associations in promoting inter-ethnic harmony in Ijebu North-East, several challenges persist. Issues such as inadequate funding, politicization, and evolving cultural identities undermine the effectiveness of these associations in maintaining peaceful coexistence (Balogun, 2024). Furthermore, the increasing competition for resources and political influence among ethnic groups has occasionally led to intra-association conflicts, diluting their intended purpose. These challenges hinder the associations from fully addressing ethnic disparities and fostering a climate of mutual understanding. Consequently, there is a critical need to assess these obstacles and explore strategies to enhance the associations’ capacity to build sustainable inter-ethnic relationships (Ibrahim, 2023).
